North Uist Diary

Words from the artist’s notebook

In the collection of Lord and Lady Gavron

This diary piece, related to the ‘Japan Diary’ and ‘Isle of Mull Diary’, was the first in a series which became an ongoing project using personal word lists as ‘triggers’ for memories.

Isolated from the context of sentences and grammar, these mundane, prosaic words assume another sort of sequence when rendered in these lines. Painted with scale and space as here, language, in its visual manifestation, seems to become ‘extra-ordinary’, creating new resonances that transcend those they had when they were merely part of a list.
