This piece, like the ‘Isle of Mull Diary’ and ‘North Uist Diary’ work, is part of an ongoing project that employs personal word lists as ‘triggers’ for memories. ‘Japan Diary’ examines the iconic nature of letterforms, rotating them variously to discover the common structures they might possess. At the same time, by emphasising their simplicity, questions can be raised about the value we ascribe to these arbitrary phonetic signs.
